Econet Wireless Zimbabwe (EWZ), Cassava Smartech and Kwese Television are being sued for over $1.7 million by former business partner Dr Dish Private Limited for unpaid subscription revenue.
Dr Dish Executive Director Nyasha Muzavazi says on 15 August 2017 his firm entered into an agreement with Econet Media, where the latter was supposed to beam television channels and other related services under the Carriage Dr Dish.
In return for carriage and broadcast of Kwese Tv Channel packages through applicant’s broadcasting licence , Dr Dish was entitled to 5% of the subscriptions and at that rate it would generate $58 000 within the first month alone.
However, Econet failed to deliver on what Dr Dish views as breach of contract when Econet Media failed to deliver on the agreed terms and conditions of the initial agreement.
According to Muzavazi, Econet refused to provide the actual base of subscriptions from October 2017 to December 2017 of Kwese Tv which has led Dr Dish to be owed millions of dollars by Econet.
In a statement released by Econet, the Sheriff of the High Court visited Econet’s subsidiary, Ecocash premises seeking information on their clientele, however they could not aveil the information as the court order did not specifically ordered them to do so.
” On Friday 22 Friday 2019, the Sheriff of the High Court attended at the premises of EcoCash Private Limited with an order of the High Court directing that the sheriff search the promises for sensitive information pertaining to customers,”
“On the perusal of the order we noticed either Ecocash Private Limited nor Econet Private Limited who are the custodians of the said information, had been cited as parties to the order,”the statement said.
Ecocash has however distanced themselves to the whole fiasco, as they have denied have any association with Dr Dish. According to Ecocash, the relationship Dr Dish had with its affiliate Econet was terminated in 2017.
Ecocash has since filed an Urgent Chamber Application in the High Court to have the issue resolved.
