Ultimatum for Mobile Money Operators

The Ministry of Information Communication Technology and Cyber Security  has issued an ultimatum to all Mobile Money players to make mobile money services interoperable.

In a statement, the ICT and Cyber Security Ministry wrote that operators should fully integrate their mobile money systems to allow wallet to wallet funds transfer

In the event that there is no interoperability across all networks by the set date of 1 April 2018 the government shall take appropriate measures to enhance compliance

“We have noted with great concern that whilst it is possible to send money to unregistered customer on another network, the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) platforms for operators are not yet fully integrated, hence wallet to wallet funds transfer have not yet been integrated.”

Zimbabwe has more than three mobile money players which include Ecocash, One Money, Telecash and Getcash and others.

The lack of interoperability of the mobile money platforms has become a  major barrier to effective competition and stalls further progress in the development of mobile money services.
