#Breaking: POTRAZ Never banned Econet, NetOne & Telecel Promotions – regulator clarifies position

The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) has diplomatically distanced itself from the mobile promotions ban, revealing that they never banned any promotions which were being offered by the mobile network operators to their respective subscribers.

Contrary to what the players flighted in the respective press releases, the Acting Director General of POTRAZ, Mrs Cecelia Nyamutswa wrote to us refuting those claims saying the regulator never issued directives to ban Econet, Telecel and NetOne promotions.

Econet Wireless, Telecel and NetOne recently flighted press releases informing their valued customers, stating that they have been given direct orders by the regulator to stop running their various airtime and data bundles promotions.

The players  reportedly had a closed door meeting where they discussed the issues at length and were advised that the promotion which were expired will not run till they were renewed.

Below are the Qns asked and Answers which came direct from the Director General’s office today:

Can the regulator elaborate on the reasons behind the directive to suspend these promos?

There was no directive to suspend promotions. Each promotion runs for a specific period with an expiry date . There was no instruction to operators to stop any promotion in the middle of its life. If any promotions have stopped running ,it is because the period for which it was approved has expired. Operators are not allowed to run unapproved promotions.

Will there be a resumption of such promos in the near future and if so when?

Any promotion approved by the regulator will run for the period for which it is approved

Will other telecoms services offering promos like broadband services be affected?

All approved promotions will run for approved periods

Are there any plans to announce a new set of tariffs for mobile telecoms?

Both the regulator and Operators will advise subscribers within reasonable time if there are new sets of tariffs coming up.
